Professional Experience and Overview of Practice Areas

Ms. Wegner is an experienced litigator, having tried, arbitrated, mediated and settled a number of cases during the course of her legal career. She has extensive, first-chair experience handling complex employment, business and entertainment cases, including individual and multi-plaintiff harassment, discrimination, retaliation and wage and hour matters, and has participated in and supervised all aspects of such cases.

By way of example, she has handled matters pending before state and federal agencies (such as the EDD, DFEH, EEOC, OSHA, DOL and the DLSE, among others), has taken and defended numerous depositions, drafted and argued extensive discovery, summary judgment and post-trial motions and appeals, tried, arbitrated and mediated employment and business disputes and has drafted and negotiated numerous settlements, separation agreements and employment agreements.

She also regularly conducts investigations into allegations of harassment, discrimination, retaliation and other workplace misconduct and provides training in the areas of discrimination and harassment prevention, anger management and effective management techniques. Although her practice has focused primarily on resolution of employment and commercial disputes, she also has handled white-collar criminal matters, a pro bono death penalty appeal and insurance matters. Ms. Wegner is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

Although Ms. Wegner remains available to assist with litigation matters on a limited basis, in the past few years, she has shifted the primary focus of her practice away from litigation and toward negotiation of employment and separation agreements, counseling, workplace investigations and training, all with an eye toward helping employers and employees avoid and/or resolve disputes before such matters blossom into litigation or arbitration. Believing in the old adage that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” Ms. Wegner spends a good deal of her time advising employers about how to comply with their legal and ethical obligations toward employees, working with both employers and employees to improve conduct, morale and teamwork in the workplace, investigating allegations of workplace misconduct and negotiating settlements of disputes on a pre-litigation basis. By offering such counseling and other services, she hopes to foster more productive, positive and supportive relationships in the workplace and help to reduce the need for litigation as a means of addressing employment problems.
